Portraits of Orphans from Tubeho

Elise:  Orphan and student

I am a student at the Université Libre de Kigali where I study business administration. I am an orphan who has lost both my parents during the genocide of 1994. I grew up in Kwamagana in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. We were five children in my family, but I am the only one who survived. Today, I live with my cousins who are also orphans and we form a reconstituted family within the Association Tubeho. (read more about me…)

Jeannette:  Orphan, student and head of a reconstituted family

I am a student at the Université Libre de Kigali where I study economics. I am the head of reconstituted household, taking care of six children that are orphans from the genocide like me. I was ten years hold when the genocide started in Rwanda. My father, my mother, my two sisters and my baby brother have all been killed during the genocide. My parents loved me and took great care of me, now it is my turn to do so for others and this is why I am studying so that I can find a job that pays enough to buy food and offer them a chance to study. (read more about me…)

Berthe:  Orphan, lecturer in Canada

Thanks to the “Association Tubeho,” I belong, I exist, I have found a new identity after the genocide. My brothers, sisters and I do not feel alone because of this association. It allows us to meet and share. In writing my thesis about this association, I bandaged some wounds but also gave voice to my neighbors. Briefly, ‘Tubeho” is my new family. (read more about me…)

Ange:  Orphan and student

For me Tubeho has made a lot of things possible in my life. Before I joined Tubeho, I felt lonely. Now, I have friends with whom I can share the pleasure of being alive. Thanks to Tubeho, I know that there are people who care for us, who help us to have something to eat, and sometimes even help us to build our future. To study is the key of my future and I would like to see everyone in Tubeho have the chance to find a job… this would be ideal even though it’s unlikely to happen. (read more about me…)
